Nippon Express and Fujitsu Awarded Project to Counter Global Warming

Companies implement joint study to reduce truck CO₂ emissions in Asia

Nippon Express Co.,Ltd.and Fujitsu Limited today announced that their jointly-submitted proposal on a project to reduce CO₂ emissions has been accepted by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization （NEDO） as one of the projects approved under the first round of the organization's projects for fiscal 2011, promoting the diffusion of technologies to counter global warming.

The objective of NEDO's program is to promote the use of Japan's advanced low-carbon technologies and products outside of Japan in order to reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions in other countries. In turn, through bilateral or multilateral emissions trading, this would allow the development of a new scheme which would enable these emissions reductions to be counted as a reduction in Japan's emissions by creating a bilateral offset mechanism.

Targeting the CO₂ emissions of trucks operating in Asian countries, the project being implemented by Nippon Express and Fujitsu would measure the reduction in CO₂ emissions achieved through a vehicle operations management system that uses vehicle-based terminals and cloud computing applications. The project will also study ways of converting the emissions reductions into credits.

-Building a Vehicle Operations Management System in the Host Country and Developing Cloud Applications for Measurable, Reportable, and Verifiable Emissions Reductions-

1. Objective
As the initial step toward the creation of a bilateral offset mechanism that is measurable, reportable, and verifiable （MRV）, the project aims to develop MRV cloud applications that calculate the reduction in CO₂ emissions levels achieved through the use of a vehicle operations management system. The project also aims to conduct fielding testing of this system and produce a design for a bilateral offset mechanism and a roadmap for its implementation.

3. Targeted Logistics Operations
Local subsidiaries of Nippon Express in host countries of Asia （expected）

4. Description
Through the use of cloud computing technology, Fujitsu will collect data on mileage and fuel consumption from terminals built into Nippon Express trucks; develop cloud applications for calculating and analyzing the reductions in CO₂ emissions in ways that are measurable, reportable, and verifiable; and deploy the terminals to be installed in the truck fleets of the local subsidiaries of Nippon Express in throughout Asia. With the aim of achieving major reductions in CO₂ emissions, Nippon Express will implement in its operations outside of Japan, the same safe eco-drive program that it is currently executing in Japan. The two companies will also work to design as well as produce a roadmap for building an offset mechanism that could be widely implemented in the future.
